THE PRIORY- 21/12/99- INTERVIEW WITH
STEPHEN GATELY
presented by Zoe Ball and Jamie Theakston
JAMIE THEAKSTON: Now we've got the wonderful Stephen
Gately. He's had a turbulent 12 months where he's had to cope
with coming out as being gay as well as being in a hugely
successful boy band. Boyzone are currently on tour so he couldn't
be with us tonight but, boy, did you have a ton of questions to
ask him. We chose the best, bunged them on a tape and flew them
over to him and here are his answers.
SORRY I CAN'T BE WITH YOU. . .
STEPHEN: How ya doin'? I'm Stephen Gately from Boyzone.
Hi Zoe, hi Jamie. Erm, sorry I couldn't be there in the studio,
erm, I'm on tour at the moment, but erm, I'm going to answer a
few questions anyway. So, let's see what they are.
FAN: Stephen, are Boyzone past their sell-by-date or is
there life left in the band yet?
STEPHEN: Er, a question that we get asked every year or
every couple of months or whatever's put in the press, are
Boyzone splitting up? Er, yeah, I mean the tour's sold out, we've
gone and doing 9 shows in Dublin in January and so I mean its
incredible and we're really pleased that people still support us
and still like our music and what we're doing.
('Every Day I Love You' video clip played)
FAN: Hi. Stephen, is it true that only you and Ronan can
sing?
STEPHEN: Oooooh, that's not very nice! Er, no definitely
not. Er, some members of the band are stronger than others at
singing. Erm on this tour, the last tour. . . Actually, on this
tour Mikey does a solo song and Keith does a solo song and on he
tour beforehand they also done, erm, solo songs.
FAN: Hey Stephen! I just wanna know- is life better now
that you're openly gay?
STEPHEN: Erm, yeah, yeah, it's much better. I can be
myself, I can walk around with Eloy rather than, y'know, (new
picture of Steo and Eloy shown, old picture of Eloy shown) having
to get on 2 different planes and meet in a hotel or, y'know, book
under 2 different names and anything really or book 2 different
cars. It's been a lot better, it's a lot of weight off my
shoulders. The main worry was that, y'know, people would support
me and,
erm, the support has been there from so many people, so many
different walks of life and so, erm, I'm very pleased and very
happy, much more relaxed. Cheers!
FAN: Hi Stephen. This is Claudette here. I hear you have
a tattoo on your leg. Any chance we can see it?
STEPHEN: (Laughing) Ha ha, no way! Erm, it's not on my
leg. If it was here (pointing to leg), I'd pull my trousers up
and show you, but it's right on my hip (tapping hip), erm, so I
can't really show it unless I pull down my trousers and I have no
underwear on at the moment so erm I can't really do that. It's of
a tasmanian devil (picture of tattoo shown) and (shaking head),
no I'm not going to show it.
FAN: Hi Stephen. I'm Emily from Essex. Did you rate your
boyfriend's band Caught In The Act?
(TV audience can be heard cheering wildly in the background)
STEPHEN: Well, there was 4 members, er, with 1 really
good looking member. . .
(Clip of CITA video ahown)
STEPHEN: They went on for 6 years or something like
that. So, erm, he's just about to do some solo stuff. Er, yeah, I
did like some of the songs. I did, I do enjoy the music, yeah.
It's pop music and that's what I like.
FAN: Hello Stephen, I'm Romelie from London. You've
recently said that you'd like to adopt a child. Do you think
you'd make a good Dad?
STEPHEN: (nods head vigorously) Erm, I think I'd make a
good Dad, y'know, I. . . Keith, Keith out of the group has a kid,
my sister has a kid Jordan and my brother has Brandon. Y'know,
there's lots of kids always around with, erm, all the rest of the
guys and I'm always there playing with them or having a laugh
with them. I love kids and I like making them smile or giggle and
playing jokes with them so, yeah, I think I'd make a good father.
FAN: Hi Stephen, I'm Kate from Epsom. I've noticed that
recently you've stopped doing so many dance routines. Is that
because you can't really dance?
STEPHEN: Absolutely! Rubbish at it!
(VERY embarrassing clip shown of that infamous 'Late Late Show'
performance)
STEPHEN: Anyway, erm, this has been The Gately Report
(points finger at camera like Jamie Theakston does in the
'Theakston Report' section of the show), erm, take it easy and
I'll see you soon, god bless.
