Boyzone are in Stockholm to perform. But Ronan is in his
hotelroom with a sore throat and Mikey has to fly home because of
personal matters. Are Boyzone just tired? or is it just bad luck
that they have cancelled their visit to Sweden twice? FRIDA met
with three very tired boys...
The day before the interview I'm at the hotel Sheraton to meet
B*Witched. Suddenly Boyzone come into the room. Ronan looks
really sad. He can't talk because he has lost his voice. But the
others are talking to B*Witched. In the evening Stephen walks up
on stage and sings "No Matter What" - that sold 600,000
copies in two days in England. Early next mornng I'm in a coach
with Shane, who is much cuter in reality, and Stpehen, who is
little but says that he is a man. We're going to talk about what
the boyz actually think about their Boyzone life.
There are rumours that you are going to split up. Why do you
think these rumours are appearing?
Shane: It's when life is settling down and then people come up
with stories. But we have been together for five years, and will
be for about five more years.
Ronan writes most of your music. This years he has lost his
mum and other people clse to him. Has that affected the band?
Shane: Of course it has. But even if you have sorrow, you can
overcome it.
Have you supported him?
Shane: Of course we have supported him, but what can you do?
People die. There is nothing you can do about it. You just need
some time to get over it.
Everybody has got married except Stephen and Mikey...
Stephen: We will get married sometime. I don't think it's so
important. I haven't met anybody that I want to marry. I'm not in
a rush and everybody is happy.
How does it feel to be married and be in a band?
Shane: It works for me. But it's different for everybody in the
band.
How does it feel to be so loved and be so famous like you?
Stephen: It's pretty hard. But I'm used to it after 5 years. We
don't have problems with that. But I miss being able to go out
and shop for myself, like yesterday. When we came to Stockholm I
wanted to go out and shop. But I couldn't because there were so
many people waiting for us.
Do you try to dress up or do you stay at home?
Stephen: I prefer to stay inside.
Have you ever regretted joining the band?
Stephen: Sometimes. When you are tired.
Shane: I think the only bad thing is that you don't have any
provacy. It's pain when people can't stay away from your home.
Sometimes when you come home and there are about twenty people in
your garden, you just think "oh no"! But most of them
are really nice and understand when you explain. I don't want to
be unpolite. Sometimes I might get pissed off. But I'm tryinbg to
explain that they're intruding into my privacy. Then they
actually apologise.
Do you think you look more positively or negatively on life
after having been in Boyzone?
Shane: I should say that I look more negatively on life now. I am
more cynical now. And it's difficult to meet people who don't
have the same experiences as yourself. I fell that I've already
done what they are dreaming about. I don't want to judge anybody
but you look at life from different sides. People have wishes and
hopes. Mine have already come true.
Any dreams left?
Yeah, I want to be successful in motorsports.
What has been the best thing about being in Boyzone?
Stephen: that we've travelled so much.
But have you seen that much?
Stephen: No, mostly it's just been hotels.
Shane: Sometimes you're allowed to go out sightseeing. It's fun
to see all the beautiful; houses and "dadada" (Shane
says this when he means blah, blah), but we're not that
interested in architecture.
What are you interested in then? partying?
Shane: No, not that either. Just to sit here and talk to people,
spend time in different places. Stephen: I want to meet my
friends. I don't have many friends left. I haven't had any time
to meet them in five years. You have grown up so much. Now I just
hang out with other musicians and my really close friends.
